The permit set is sealed: a cover sheet, two pages of specifications, five architectural sheets and ten structural. It is a heavier document than the house it describes, which feels right for something that has to stand up to wind at 115 miles an hour.

The plan hasn't changed much since the first sketch. Two storeys, a full basement, a three-bay garage tucked to the side and a rear porch deep enough to eat under. What the structural sheets add is the quiet stuff: portal frames at the garage, hold-downs at the corners, R-49 in the roof.
